What is the difference between American and English Labs

American Labrador

This is the $10,000.00 question. So, I decided to do some research and this is what I came up with. Now, please understand , this is how I understand it to be, show or family dog, service dog or field trial dog, THERE IS ONLY ONE LABRADOR RETRIEVER BREED, WITHIN THE BREED THERE ARE TWO DISTINCT TYPES.  The drastic differences in type can make it seem as though there are actually tow different breeds.  The differences are not only seen in appearance but can be readily seen in temperament and activity level.  These differences are very important in selecting a Labrador Retriever to be a life companion.  Successful dog ownership occurs when our dong's temperament and energy level is a good match to our own.  This breed of dogs originated in the Newfoundland and Labrador region of Canada and traveled to different parts of the world.  Labradors found a great deal of patronizing in England and other European countries.  Dog lovers there took a keen interest in these dogs and bred them for show conformation albeit keeping their purebred characteristics.  Based on their breeding and local conditions a new Lab sub-type called English Labradors emerged. THE TRUTH  IS THE TERMS AMERICAN LABRADORS AND ENGLISH LABRADORS ARE NOT OFFICIAL.  However, they are universally recognized and the distinction is visible in the body built or dogs.In a statement, THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB, the only organization officially recognized by the AMERICA KENNEL CLUB as a national parent club of the Labrador Retriever breed clarified this issue:

English Labrador

"WITHIN THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER BREED TYPE THERE ARE VARIATIONS IN BODY STYLE WHICH HAVE EVOLVED TO SUIT THE USE OF THE DOG, AS WELL AS THE PREFERENCES  OF INDIVIDUAL BREEDERS AND OWNERS.  IN THE UNITED STATES THE GENERAL PUBLIC HAS BEGUN TO LABEL THESE VARIATIONS MISTAKENLY AS "ENGLISH" OR "AMERICAN" STYLE.  PERHAPS A BETTER DESCRIPTION FOR VARIATIONS IN STYLE IS "SHOW/CONFORMATION" OR "WORKING /FIELD" STYLES.

ENGLISH STYLE: Has a heavier look about them.  Blockier and bigger built with barrel chests, they are noticeably wider and more solid looking.  Has a wider head with a more pronounced and better defined stop, a fuller face and a shorter muzzle which further adds to their more solidly built appearance.  They have a thicker, more powerful looking neck, noticeably thicker coat, with a wider thicker and generally straighter tail, better known as an "OTTER TAIL", shorter legs and hence doesn't stand quite so tall, with a shorter body.

AMERICAN STYLE: Has a lighter, slimmer looking body, with a more athletic build, lithe and finer boned, they look more agile and ready to go.  The head is not as wide as their English cousins, the skull and face are noticeably narrower, with their muzzle more streamlined and longer than the English Lab.

CONCLUSION: There are quite considerable differences between "AMERICAN TYPE" and "ENGLISH TYPE" Labradors, both in looks and disposition.  So, which type is best for you?  This depends on your lifestyle and what you  want fro your dog.  American type Labradors are generally more athletic, energetic, more highly driven and better suited to an outdoor life of hunting and sports, or for families with a great deal of energy and real outdoor types. English type Labradors are blockier and bigger built, calmer, more docile and better suited for a life as a family pet..., but still an active family nonetheless.  To choose between the types, do a little research, bee honest with your self about which would best fit into your pace of life and try to meet a few of each type to see which your prefer.  If you know what your're after before you ever approach a breeder then your're much more likely to end up with a Labrador that best suits you, and a Labrador will end up with an owner that is best for them.

AMERICAN TYPES ARE NOT ALWAYS MORE ENERGETIC AN DEMANDING, ENGLISH TYPES ARE NOT ALWAYS MORE RELAXED AND EASIER TO HANDLE, BUT THE TYPES ARE TRUE ENOUGH TO BE A GOOD GUIDE AND A PLACE TO START.  ALSO, THERE ARE ENGLISH TYPES IN WORKING/FIELD TRIALS/HUNTING ARENA, AND AMERICAN TYPES IN THE SHOW/CONFORMATION ARENA.
